Stereotactic radiosurgery (CyberKnife) is a new and very efficient approach to treating brain tumours with 3-D imaging technology. It targets high doses of radiation with a precision of one to two millimetres to the affected area with minimal impact on the surrounding healthy tissue.

The goal is to deliver doses that will destroy the tumour and achieve permanent local control.

This technique uses a linear accelerator (Linac), which generates a very precise radiation beam, ensuring the accuracy and safety of the method. CyberKnife allows access to the deepest structures of the brain, which are difficult to reach by conventional methods.

How it works?

The specialized equipment focuses many small beams of radiation on a tumour or other target.

The high dose of radiation delivered to the affected area causes tumours to shrink and blood vessels to close off over time following treatment, isolating the tumour of its blood supply.

The accuracy of Cyber Knife means there's minimal damage to the healthy surrounding tissues. In most cases, radiosurgery has a lower risk of side effects compared with other types of traditional surgery or radiation therapy.

What Can Be Expected in the Long Term?

Long-term outlook really depends on the exact condition being treated. Radiation damages the DNA of the cells in the area being targeted. As a result, it may take weeks or even months for those cells to stop reproducing and eventually die off. Your healthcare provider will be able to monitor your progress using imaging tests such as MRI and CT scans to look at the size of the tumour and the area that was treated.
