Description
The purpose of the ICD is to diagnose serious ventricular disorders and treat them. In France, about 50,000 sudden deaths could be prevented by this device.
According to the SFC (French Society of Cardiology), it is strongly recommended that following patients wear an ICD:
- Patients who have been resuscitated
- Patients with signs of serious Arrhythmia
- Patients with cardiac disease (eg: coronary disease, heart muscle disease, genetical or non family related heart disease).
Care
Implanted via local anesthetia directly under the skin at the left clavicle, It stimulates the heart through low voltage electric shocks. It monitors and normalizes heart rate, just like a pacemaker would.
Moreover, the operative risks for application are rare, and the device needs to be changed only every 5 years, which avoids infections and intracardial catheter related problems.
- Local anesthesia for placing the device a few centimeters under the left clavicle
- Realized on a one-day hospitalisation basis
- Postoperative follow-up during 15 days after the placement of the device
