The coronary stent is a main asset in the treatment of coronary diseases. This small metal spring keeps the artery "open" to facilitate the blood flow to the heart. This intervention is a real alternative to open heart heavy operations. In 2002, nearly 110,000 stents were placed. They reduce by 90% the number of emergency bypass surgery and by 35 to 50% the need for any type of reoperation. In other words, it has outstanding efficiency.
In addition to keeping the artery widened, the stent can deliver a drug within the vein, thereby greatly decreasing the possibility of restenosis.
